Information for General Practitioners
Welcome to Camden Surgical Hospital’s Direct Access Endoscopy program.
Direct Access Endoscopy is suitable for patients without significant co-morbidities which might impact on pre-procedure advice and peri-procedure medication management.
Indication for Referral for Gastroscopy:
- Iron deficiency
- Test for coeliac disease/lactose intolerance
- Oesophageal reflux
Indication for Referral for Colonoscopy:
- Positive FOBT
Patients not suitable for Direct Access Endoscopy may include:
- Age greater than 75 years
- Patients with a BMI more than 45 kg/m2
- Use of Clopidogrel, Ticagelor (Brilinta) or Prasugrel (Effient)
- Anticoagulant medication
- Previous complications with sedation/anaesthetic
- Type 1 Diabetes
- Type 2 Diabetes on Insulin
- Renal insufficiency
- Congestive Cardiac Failure
- Advance Lung Disease
- Epilepsy
Patients with any of the above conditions, and/or other significant co-morbidities, should be referred to a medical specialist for assessment prior to their procedure.

Camden Surgical Hospital has protocols in place to screen Direct Access patients prior to their procedure. If you have any questions, or if you are uncertain about whether your patient meets the above referral criteria, please contact our Direct Access Co-Ordinator.
